Cathodic Protection – Polywrap and Coatings

An extensive network of ductile cast iron pipe systems used in the water utility industry are present throughout the world. These pipelines are installed both offshore and onshore, and in both cases are subject to the deteriorating effects of corrosion. If left unchecked, these pipelines can suffer damage that is both expensive and dangerous. At EGW Water & Plumbing, we offer a wide range of polywrap and coating products for water pipelines that aid in providing cathodic protection and deterring corrosion.

In order to diminish corrosive attacks, cathodic protection can be applied to either coated or uncoated pipes, above or below ground. Factors that affect the application of these methods include soil resistivity, required current, and the area requiring protection.

Polywrap

EGW Water & Plumbing provides multiple options of utility grade plain or printed polywrap in various colors, ranging from 1 to 108 inches in width, 8 millimeters in thickness, and conform to AWWA specifications. These products are used by water utilities to help with cathodic protection for ductile cast iron pipe and protect against corrosion. They are made in the USA and consist of linear low density virgin polyethylene.

We also offer polywrap tape, available in 2 and 4 inch widths. They consist of plasticized and stabilized PVC film coated with a non-corrosive pressure sensitive adhesive. The ideal application of this tape is for wrapping elbows, valves, and fittings.

Pipeline Coatings

Coatings provide another weapon in the fight against corrosion and in aiding cathodic protection, and at EGW, we are a source of quality coating options from Denso, including Densyl Tape, Denso Paste, and Denso Profiling Mastic.

Densyl tape delivers long term corrosion resistance to valves, flanges, pipes, and other related surfaces. Denso paste can be used as an effective primer before the application of Denso petrolatum tapes. Denso profiling mastic creates a smooth profile on more complex shaped fittings such as valves and flanged joints. Denso is a leader in the field when it comes to corrosion prevention and sealing technology.
