The Difference Between a Full-Face Gasket and a Ring Gasket

One of the advantages we offer suppliers is our experience and expertise in solving problems. Many of the wholesalers we partner with at EGW Water and Plumbing have come to rely on our staff to provide the ideal parts, materials, and components to solve problems their customers are experiencing on projects in the waterworks, plumbing, and natural gas industries.

Frequently, customers of our wholesale partners are trying to determine if a full face gasket or a ring gasket is the best solution for a specific application. To help answer the question and solve the problem, there are some important factors to consider.

The Differences

A full face gasket covers the entire face of the flange. This means it has the same outer diameter measurement as the flange, and will also have the necessary holes for the securing bolts pre-cut into the gasket. Positioning the gasket is made easier with the presence of the securing bolt holes. The professional installing the gasket lines up the interior hole, the securing bolt holds and knows the gasket is in the correct location.

With the use of the full face gasket, there is no way for dirt to get into the space between the two bolting surfaces, which has its benefits. The gasket must be the correct interior diameter, exterior diameter and have the bolt holes and spacing correct for the flange.

A ring gasket, on the other hand, is positioned inside of the securing bolts. It sits only around the pipe bore, which may include on the raised surface of a raised faced flange. These gaskets are universal for use as only the interior diameter, and the outside diameter of the raised component measurements are required.
